Q. What is the Shasta Regional Community Foundation?

A.
The Shasta Regional Community Foundation is a community foundation, founded in 1999 (an outgrowth of the Grant and Resource Center of Northern California) to build resources to meet needs in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties through philanthropy, education and information. A community foundation takes the gifts of donors and places them in charitable funds. Grants are made from these funds to a variety of nonprofit organizations. The Shasta Regional Community Foundation currently manages 79 different funds, with total assets of $4.8 million. Since 1999, the Foundation has given out over $2.7 million in grants and scholarships. The Foundation grants out over $700,000 annually.

Q. What is a community foundation?

A.
A community foundation is an independent, tax-exempt, philanthropic organization created to help people, businesses, and organizations in a particular geographic area give charitably through the foundation. A community foundation exists to further philanthropy. A community foundation builds a collection of endowed charitable funds from donors, provides services to those donors, makes grants, and promotes community leadership. There are over 700 community foundations in the U.S., including 54 in California.

Q. Who gives through the Shasta Regional Community Foundation?

A.
Individuals, families, organizations, businesses and service clubs establish funds at the Foundation. Currently there are 49 funds at the Foundation - each one reflects the donor's unique charitable goals.

Q. Why should I establish a fund through the Shasta Regional Community Foundation?

A.
Giving through a fund at the Foundation is a win-win-win. First, you win as a donor because you are able to fulfill your giving dreams - while receiving tax advantages, because a community foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Second, the community wins, as worthy organizations receive support. Third, if you have children, they win, too. By giving through a permanent endowment fund at the Foundation, you set up a legacy of giving. You can establish your fund so your children can carry on your philanthropic example by advising on your fund after your death.

Q.How do I apply for a grant from the Foundation?

A.
Please refer to our grants page. As a general rule, the Shasta Regional Community Foundation only grants money to nonprofit organizations - not individuals. The only individual grants the Foundation offers are through competitive scholarship programs, all of which have very specific criteria. Please call the Foundation for information on our scholarship programs.
