Siskiyou Humane Society, Valuing Empathy, Respect and Kindness
For forty three years the Siskiyou Humane Society has been dedicated to instilling the values of empathy, respect and kindness not only to animals but to the children and adults who interact with them. With a mission to prevent pet overpopulation and protect, shelter and place animals in need, Siskiyou Humane Society works tirelessly to increase the quality of life for the animals and people in the communities it serves.
As a low kill facility, the organization faces challenges that other shelters may not face. In 2009 over 770 animals came through the organization with an average length of stay of 44 days. This high volume of animals with a long length of stay means that space is often a challenge. At Siskiyou Humane Society, adoptable cats and dogs may be in the shelter for months. Keeping them behaviorally sane requires both enriched environments-beds, toys, hiding places, scratching posts, etc., and enriched activities such as training sessions and group play with other animals. To provide the enrichment needed to keep animals behaviorally healthy and adoptable in a long term situation, it is also critical to have a method of assessing each animal’s individual behaviors in order to properly and quickly match them with an owner.
Touched by the mission and vision of the organization, the Treber Duncan Fund, Josephine Taylor Fund and Patricia Kimball Fund of the Community Foundation have designated grants totaling $13,500 to support the work of Siskiyou Humane Society. These funds have gone to support the creation of a behavior program to provide the enrichment needed to keep animals behaviorally healthy and adoptable in a long term situation. This program rehabilitates animals that would otherwise be euthanized and conducts evaluations and temperament testing to allow for quicker placement of the animal with an owner.
