Joe and Esther Lawson had been awarding scholarships to Burney High School students since 1991. Esther passed away at the age of 81 and Joe at the age of 84. The executors of their estate arranged to have the scholarship administered by the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation works with Burney High School to continue awarding the scholarships. Joe and Esther Lawson both served during World War II, Joe in the Navy and Esther as an Air Force Service Pilot. The couple moved to Burney in 1946 where Joe worked as a saw filer and Esther as a secretary for the Scott Lumber Company until they retired.
Born in 1915, Joe and Esther Lawson lived full lives that included time in the military during World War II. Joe and Esther committed themselves to investing in the futures of the young people in East Shasta County. They began awarding scholarships to graduates of Burney High School students in 1991, helping numerous students achieve the dream of a higher education. Esther passed away in 1996, and upon Joe’s death in 2000, the executors of the Lawson’s estate arranged to have Shasta Regional Community Foundation administer the scholarship to ensure that the legacy of the Lawsons continues.
